What Are the Differences Between Injectable Hyaluronic Acid and Skincare Hyaluronic Acid?

In today's booming beauty market, "hyaluronic acid" is a household name. However, although both are called hyaluronic acid, injectable hyaluronic acid and the hyaluronic acid in skincare products are completely different. They differ significantly in molecular morphology, uses, and mechanisms of action.

First, their molecular morphologies are entirely different. Injectable hyaluronic acid is a medical-grade material, usually existing in the form of "cross-linked hyaluronic acid gel," with a highly viscoelastic texture that can form a stable supporting structure under the skin. In contrast, hyaluronic acid in skincare products is mostly found in water-soluble forms, including high molecular weight, medium molecular weight, low molecular weight, and even oligomeric forms, focusing more on hydration and participating in the regulation of moisture in the skin's surface.

Second, their uses differ. Injectable hyaluronic acid falls under the category of medical aesthetics, primarily used for facial filling and contouring, such as rhinoplasty, lip augmentation, and nasolabial fold filling. Its core function is to provide "volume" and structural support. Hyaluronic acid in skincare products is used for daily moisturizing and is a cosmetic ingredient. Its main function is to improve dryness and increase surface moisture content; it does not have the ability to alter facial structure.

The difference is even more pronounced in terms of the level of action. Injected hyaluronic acid penetrates directly into the dermis and even deeper layers, providing support, filling, and improving depressions within the tissue, typically lasting for several months to over a year. In contrast, hyaluronic acid in skincare products, due to its different molecular weight, works at different depths within the skin—high-molecular-weight hyaluronic acid stays on the surface to lock in moisture, medium-molecular-weight hyaluronic acid penetrates the superficial stratum corneum to replenish moisture, and low-molecular-weight hyaluronic acid penetrates deeper to improve the skin's water retention capacity, but remains confined to the epidermis and cannot reach the dermis, thus failing to achieve the shaping effect of injections.
