The Real Role of Low and Ultra-Low Molecular Weight Sodium Hyaluronate in Formulations

Sodium hyaluronate (HA) is widely used in various skincare formulations due to its excellent moisturizing and skincare benefits. Low and ultra-low molecular weight sodium hyaluronates, however, exhibit unique advantages in skin penetration, texture, and formulation design due to their different molecular structures.

Low molecular weight sodium hyaluronate has a smaller molecular volume, allowing it to penetrate more easily into the deeper layers of the epidermis, providing long-lasting hydration, improving fine lines, and enhancing skin softness. In contrast, ultra-low molecular weight sodium hyaluronate molecules are even smaller, with stronger penetrating power, reaching the bottom of the stratum corneum and even deeper into the epidermis, providing a "from the inside out" hydration experience. Furthermore, these two types of molecules also have distinct characteristics in terms of user experience: low molecular weight HA has a slightly viscous texture and spreads easily, while ultra-low molecular weight HA is lightweight and refreshing, less prone to leaving a white cast, greatly enhancing the skin feel of the formulation.

In actual formulations, low-molecular-weight and ultra-low-molecular-weight sodium hyaluronate (HA) are often used synergistically with high-molecular-weight HA. High-molecular-weight HA forms a surface moisturizing film to lock in moisture, while low-molecular-weight and ultra-low-molecular-weight HA penetrates deep into the skin to replenish moisture, achieving a multi-layered moisturizing effect. This synergistic molecular weight design not only enhances hydration and skin feel but also optimizes the stability and efficacy of the formulation.

Furthermore, formulators adjust the proportions of different molecular weight sodium hyaluronates based on the target skin type and usage scenario when designing products. For example, low-molecular-weight or ultra-low-molecular-weight HA can be appropriately increased in creams or serums to enhance deep hydration; while the surface film effect of high-molecular-weight HA is indispensable in masks or lotions. Through the scientific combination of molecular weights, products can find the optimal balance between moisturizing, skin feel, and absorption, achieving a more refined skincare experience.
