The Principles and Scientific Basis of 4D Hyaluronic Acid
With the development of ingredient-based skincare, "4D hyaluronic acid" is becoming a popular concept in skincare formulations. Compared to single-molecule hyaluronic acid, 4D hyaluronic acid achieves layered hydration and long-lasting moisturization through a combination of multiple structures. Its principles and scientific basis are being verified by more research institutions.
4D hyaluronic acid is typically composed of four types of hyaluronic acid with different molecular weights or structural characteristics, including high molecular weight, medium molecular weight, low molecular weight, and ultra-low molecular weight or cross-linked hyaluronic acid. These hyaluronic acids play different roles in the skin:
- High molecular weight hyaluronic acid mainly stays on the skin surface, forming a breathable moisturizing film and significantly reducing water evaporation;
- Medium molecular weight hyaluronic acid acts in the middle of the stratum corneum, increasing skin hydration;
- Low molecular weight and ultra-low molecular weight hyaluronic acid can more easily penetrate the deeper layers of the stratum corneum, replenishing skin moisture and supporting barrier repair.
Low molecular weight hyaluronic acid can increase the stratum corneum hydration and promote barrier protein expression; high molecular weight hyaluronic acid is clearly effective in reducing transepidermal water loss. Furthermore, certain cross-linked hyaluronic acids can form a more stable three-dimensional water-locking network, allowing the moisturizing effect to last longer.
"4D" does not refer to a single ingredient, but rather a formulation system. By scientifically combining hyaluronic acids of different molecular weights and structures, a combined effect of "instant hydration + deep penetration + long-lasting moisture retention" can be achieved. This multi-dimensional structural advantage has led to its increasing application in skincare products such as serums, creams, and masks.
As consumers' demands for moisturizing product performance increase, multi-structured hyaluronic acid systems are driving the application of hyaluronic acid from simple moisturizing to more refined functional levels. In the future, with the accumulation of more experimental evidence, the mechanism of action of 4D hyaluronic acid in formulations is expected to be further quantified and expanded.
