The Practical Role of Hyaluronic Acid in Daily Skincare

2026-01-15

Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance in the human body, mainly distributed in the dermis and intercellular matrix of the skin. Its powerful water-retention capacity makes it a core ingredient in skincare. In daily skincare, hyaluronic acid primarily plays the following practical roles:

1. Instant Hydration and Surface Moisturizing

Hyaluronic acid can absorb and lock in hundreds of times its own weight in water. As a topical skincare ingredient (usually in sodium salt form), its molecular weight determines its different functions. Large molecular weight hyaluronic acid can form a breathable moisturizing film on the skin surface, reducing transepidermal water loss, providing instant hydration, and relieving dryness and tightness.

2. Promoting Skin Hydration and Soothing

Small and medium molecular weight hyaluronic acid can penetrate deep into the stratum corneum, filling the intercellular matrix and enhancing skin hydration. This helps soften the stratum corneum, making the skin feel smooth, and can alleviate itching or mild discomfort caused by dryness to some extent, making it suitable as a basic moisturizing and soothing ingredient.

3. Helps Maintain Skin Barrier Function

As a component of the extracellular matrix, supplementing with exogenous hyaluronic acid helps maintain the normal structure and moisture balance of the stratum corneum. A healthy stratum corneum barrier better resists external stimuli and reduces sensitivity. Therefore, it is often used in repair skincare products, working synergistically with other barrier-repairing ingredients (such as ceramides).

4. Enhances the Penetration Efficiency of Other Ingredients

The hydrating environment created by hyaluronic acid promotes the penetration and absorption of subsequent active ingredients (such as vitamin C and niacinamide), acting as a "booster" in functional skincare routines. Many serums use it as a base layer.
