Synergistic Effect of Sodium Hyaluronate and Ceramides in Repairing the Skin Barrier

The skin barrier, composed of keratinocytes and intercellular lipids, functions primarily to maintain skin hydration and protect against external environmental stimuli. When the skin barrier is damaged, symptoms such as dryness, sensitivity, and redness appear. Sodium hyaluronate and ceramides are commonly used skin barrier repair ingredients in skincare products. Through synergistic action, they significantly enhance barrier repair efficiency, outperforming the effects of using either ingredient alone.

Sodium hyaluronate is a water-soluble polysaccharide with extremely strong hydrophilicity, capable of absorbing 1000 times its own weight in water. Its mechanism of action primarily involves forming a breathable moisturizing film on the skin surface, reducing transepidermal water loss. Ceramides are a major component of intercellular lipids, accounting for 40%-50%, and are a core component for maintaining the integrity of the skin barrier structure. Its main function is to fill the gaps between keratinocytes, enhance the density of the stratum corneum, and reduce transepidermal water loss. Simultaneously, it can enhance the skin's resistance to external stimuli, inhibit the release of inflammatory factors, and alleviate sensitivity and redness after barrier damage.

The synergistic effect of these two ingredients is reflected in a complete barrier repair loop: sodium hyaluronate deeply hydrates and increases the moisture content of the stratum corneum, providing the necessary moisturizing environment for barrier repair; ceramides replenish intercellular lipids, rebuild a dense barrier structure, and reduce water loss. Clinical research data shows that when used in combination, the increase in skin moisture content and the rate of barrier function recovery are significantly higher than with single ingredients. Continuous use for 4 weeks can effectively improve dryness and peeling symptoms and reduce the incidence of skin sensitivity. For skin barrier damage caused by factors such as excessive cleansing and UV radiation, the synergistic repair of these two ingredients can accelerate the recovery of skin barrier function.
