Recent Advances in the Treatment of Dry Eye with Hyaluronic Acid

Dry eye is a common ocular surface disease, mainly characterized by insufficient tear secretion or excessive tear evaporation, leading to dry eyes, fatigue, burning sensation, and even visual fluctuations. In recent years, the prevalence of dry eye has continued to rise due to increased screen time and environmental factors. Traditional treatments include artificial tears, anti-inflammatory drugs, and physical therapy, but their long-term effects and comfort are sometimes unsatisfactory. Recent research shows that hyaluronic acid exhibits new potential in the treatment of dry eye, providing patients with a more effective option.

Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring polysaccharide molecule found in the ocular surface and joints, possessing strong water-retention and lubricating properties. In ophthalmology, it has long been used as a component of artificial tears to relieve mild dry eye. However, the breakthrough in new therapies lies in the optimization research of the molecular structure, concentration, and combined applications of hyaluronic acid. Scientists have discovered that hyaluronic acid of different molecular weights has different functions: low molecular weight hyaluronic acid has strong permeability and can promote the repair of ocular surface cells; high molecular weight hyaluronic acid stays on the ocular surface for a longer time, forming a durable protective film. Novel formulations, through precise proportioning of hyaluronic acid at different molecular weights, significantly enhance moisturizing and repairing effects.

Furthermore, research focuses on the synergistic effects of hyaluronic acid with other components. For example, combining hyaluronic acid with lipids or electrolytes can simultaneously replenish both the aqueous and lipid layers of the tear film, more comprehensively mimicking the structure of natural tears. Clinical trials show that these composite formulations can more effectively alleviate dry eye symptoms, prolong tear film breakup time, and improve ocular surface inflammation. Especially for patients with moderate to severe dry eye, high-concentration hyaluronic acid eye drops or gels can provide long-lasting relief and reduce the frequency of medication use.

In the future, hyaluronic acid therapy may be further integrated with drug delivery systems, such as as a carrier for anti-inflammatory drugs, to achieve targeted therapy. Overall, new hyaluronic acid-based therapies are driving dry eye management towards personalization and efficiency, bringing patients a better clinical experience and improved quality of life. Patients should choose an appropriate treatment plan under the guidance of a physician, based on the type and severity of their dry eye.
