Recent Advances in Sodium Hyaluronate Injection Therapy for Joints
Sodium hyaluronate (HA) is a natural polysaccharide widely found in human synovial fluid, playing a role in lubricating joints, cushioning impacts, and protecting cartilage. With the increasing prevalence of joint diseases, especially knee osteoarthritis, sodium hyaluronate injection therapy has become an important non-surgical treatment option.
Recent studies have shown that the application of sodium hyaluronate in joint injection therapy is constantly being optimized and upgraded. Firstly, there have been new advances in molecular weight selection. Early HA formulations had lower molecular weights, primarily functioning to improve the viscoelasticity of synovial fluid. Newer generations of high molecular weight or cross-linked sodium hyaluronate not only have stronger lubricating effects but also prolong their residence time in the joint cavity, thereby reducing the number of injections and improving patient compliance.
Formulation and injection techniques are also being improved. Modern sodium hyaluronate formulations often employ low-immunogenicity purification processes to reduce the risk of allergic reactions and local inflammation. Simultaneously, ultrasound-guided injection techniques allow the drug to enter the joint cavity more precisely, improving efficacy and reducing complications.
Furthermore, combination therapy strategies with sodium hyaluronate are being extensively studied. For example, combining hyaluronic acid (HA) with platelet-rich plasma (PRP), stem cells, or anti-inflammatory drugs has shown potential advantages in relieving pain, improving joint function, and delaying cartilage degeneration. Clinical studies have shown that combination therapy has better long-term effects than HA injection alone for patients with moderate to severe osteoarthritis.
Regarding safety, sodium hyaluronate injections are still considered a relatively safe non-surgical treatment. Common adverse reactions are mostly short-term pain, mild swelling, or erythema at the injection site; serious adverse events are extremely rare.
Recent advances in the use of sodium hyaluronate in joint injection therapy include the application of high molecular weight and modified formulations, precise injection techniques, combination therapy strategies, and continuously optimized safety. These advances provide more effective and safer treatment options for patients with joint diseases and have also promoted the development of non-surgical treatment for osteoarthritis. In the future, with the further application of bioengineering technology and personalized treatment concepts, the efficacy and applicability of sodium hyaluronate are expected to be further improved.
