Oral Hyaluronic Acid: Real Nutrition or Just a Placebo?

2025-12-25

Hyaluronic acid, medically known as hyaluronan, is a naturally occurring component found in human skin, joints, and other tissues. In recent years, oral hyaluronic acid products have increasingly appeared on the market, claiming to improve skin hydration and promote joint health. Whether these products truly provide nutrition or merely offer psychological comfort has become a concern for consumers.

Scientifically, hyaluronic acid is a large-molecule polysaccharide. After oral administration, it undergoes breakdown in the digestive system, being enzymatically broken down into smaller monosaccharides or oligosaccharides before being absorbed into the bloodstream. These absorbed components are among the raw materials needed for the body to synthesize hyaluronic acid, rather than directly replenishing the hyaluronic acid already present in the skin or joints.

Currently, scientific evidence regarding the efficacy of oral hyaluronic acid is still accumulating. Some domestic and international studies suggest that oral administration of specific strengths of hyaluronic acid may have an auxiliary effect in improving dry skin and increasing skin moisture content. Other studies indicate potential benefits in relieving joint discomfort. However, the sample size and duration of these studies require further verification through larger-scale clinical trials. China's National Health Commission approved sodium hyaluronate as a new food ingredient in 2021, allowing its use in some common foods, thus providing a basis for its safety.

Experts point out that maintaining healthy skin and joint function requires a combination of factors. Skin hydration is directly affected by overall physical condition, environmental humidity, and daily skincare habits. Joint health is closely related to weight control, moderate exercise, and balanced nutrition. Oral hyaluronic acid may be a supplementary approach, but it should not be considered a "miracle substance" that replaces a healthy lifestyle or medical treatment.

For consumers considering oral hyaluronic acid products, it is important to recognize that their effects may vary from person to person and are usually slow to take effect. Choosing products approved by relevant national departments and maintaining rational consumption expectations is crucial. A balanced diet, adequate water intake, regular sleep patterns, and scientific skincare remain the foundation for maintaining good health.
