Is Hyaluronic Acid Hydration a Scam? Scientific Data Says So
Hyaluronic acid is a polysaccharide naturally found in human skin, joints, and other tissues. In recent years, skincare products and injectable treatments containing hyaluronic acid have been widely promoted in the market, touting their "powerful hydration" and "moisturizing and repairing" functions. But does hyaluronic acid truly hydrate effectively, or is it just a marketing gimmick? Scientific data provides a clear analysis.
From a chemical perspective, hyaluronic acid has strong hydrophilicity. Experiments show that 1 gram of hyaluronic acid can store up to 6 liters of water and can form a gel-like substance by absorbing water. On the skin surface, hyaluronic acid can help temporarily increase the moisture content of the stratum corneum. Multiple dermatological studies have confirmed that topical hyaluronic acid products can temporarily increase the humidity of the skin surface and reduce dryness.
However, the skin barrier structure limits the effects of hyaluronic acid. A healthy stratum corneum effectively prevents the penetration of large molecules. The molecular weight of hyaluronic acid in skincare products is usually above hundreds of thousands of Daltons, making it difficult to penetrate deep into the dermis and mainly remaining on the skin surface. This means its hydrating effect is concentrated on the surface layer, and the moisture evaporates easily, requiring the use of occlusive ingredients to lock in the moisture.
In the medical field, injectable hyaluronic acid has a different mechanism of action. Injecting hyaluronic acid into the dermis or deeper tissues allows it to directly bind moisture and increase skin volume, improving dryness and wrinkles. However, this effect is a medical procedure and fundamentally different from daily skincare products.
Based on comprehensive research data, hyaluronic acid has a clear water-absorbing capacity, but its effects are superficial and short-lived when applied topically. Its effects should be viewed rationally, and the overall formula should be considered when choosing hyaluronic acid products. Relying solely on hyaluronic acid for deep and lasting hydration may not align with the skin's physiological mechanisms.
